Egg prices and availability are no jokes these days. If you’re searching for an alternative to decorating real eggs, I’ve complied fun and creative alternatives for eggless Easter decorating ideas. Most of these use supplies you already have around your home such as cardboard, paint, and tissue paper. During the Covid lockdown, I did not want to waste eggs. My family enjoys coloring eggs, but we actually don’t enjoy eating hard boiled eggs so I started searching for ideas to celebrate Easter without wasting eggs. Use the following ideas as a jumping off point for your own creativity.
Cardboard Eggs
I saw this idea from Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas for creating our own giant eggs from cardboard and paint. It kept my kids busy and it was fun coming up with different ways to tape off the eggs. The original version uses wet chalk. I opted for paint, but markers and crayons are also a great option.
Easter Rocks
Painting rocks has become quite the hobby the last few years. It nice to take a walk on a trail and see a beautiful or inspirational rock as your stroll by. It’s so easy to transform your rocks into cute little unique easter eggs. Be inspired by these Easter egg rock from Projects with Kids.
Paper Eggs
What the next best thing to a real egg? Why a paper egg of course. You can find these cardboard or paper mache eggs at craft stores or online. Use your medium of choice to decorate.
Decoupage Eggs
Take your paper mache to the next level with these decoupage eggs from Fireflies and Mud Pies. Use modge podge to cover paper mache eggs with tissue paper. The results are giving stain glass window vibes
Paper Plate Eggs
Grab a paper plate and your hole punch to create a yarn decorated Easter egg. Get creative with your hole placement for zigzags. This fun idea is from Homeschool Preschool
String Eggs
This last one is for my advanced crafters from Craft Whack. These string eggs require balloons, string and glue. Dip your colored string through diluted glue and wrap around a balloon. Hang with a clothespin to dry. Once dry, simply pop the balloon and carefully pull through the egg.
It’s amazing what you can create with paint, glue, tissue paper, and string. Get creative with other items around your home such as chalk, shaving cream, candy, buttons, etc. The possibilities and fun for your kids is endless for eggless Easter decorating ideas.
