Brown Sugar Ham with Apple Compote

Easter has come and it’s pretty much the only time of year I cook ham. I love me a Honey Baked ham and I have tried to recreate at home, but alas my family is too small to eat even the smallest ham I can buy. We eat leftovers, I make soup, potato gratin, and even freeze for later, but we end up just tired of eating ham!

So for the last few years, I’ve purchased a ham steak and I try to fancy it up. This year I rubbed the steak with brown sugar and black pepper on both sides. Then I topped with warm apple compote and the results were amazing. Who doesn’t love a little salty and sweet combo?

To make the compote, I diced 1 apple and mixed with 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cloves, 1/8 tsp ginger, and a pinch of salt and chili powder (add more if you like it hot). I let the compote cook down for about 10 minutes until the apples were soft. I rubbed the ham on both sides with the brown sugar and lightly sprinkled black pepper and placed on the grill (I’m using my grill because of the kitchen reno, but normally I would just sear on the stove).

After the steak was seared on both sides, I topped with the apple compote. The saltiness of the ham mixing with the sweetness of the apples and brown sugar was a winner! Plus, the chili powder adds just a little kick at the end. To complete this 100% grill cooked Easter meal this year, I made sauteed potatoes (my family calls them camping potatoes) using my frying pan on the grill and asparagus. We definitely did not miss our kitchen for this holiday meal.

Enjoy!
